Point of Care

Cheap, reliable and rapid diagnostic capability

The concept of Point of Care (PoC) diagnostics has existed for decades and is best exemplified by small portable glucometers for home measurement of blood glucose for diabetic patients.

This example illustrates the concept of Point of Care: the provision of a cheap, reliable and rapid diagnostic capability that brings clear cut clinical benefits to the targeted patient group and health care system.  In the specific case of glucometers, patients can closely monitor their blood glucose conveniently at home at very low costs to themselves and the health care system and they gain an enormous clinical benefit by thus being able to more closely control their blood glucose levels.

Despite the great success of glucometers, the general promise of PoC diagnostics has not been greatly fulfilled in the marketplace for a number of reasons – many of which can be addressed through a better understanding of the interactions between biology, technology, markets, and development & approval processes.

DELTA's role

DELTA is addressing the above mentioned complexities of PoC diagnostics development by both drawing on a range of in-house competencies integral to device development while at the same time applying a systems engineering approach to both business model and technology development.

Through the specific initiative of Center for integrated Point of Care Technologies (CiPoC), we have focus on detection and identification of infectious disease agents – pathogens – i.e., bacteria, vira, parasites and molds, while we in other initiatives focus on other aspects of PoC in which our somewhat generic technologies and knowledge can be applied.

By using these methods and drawing on DELTA’s competencies in microelectronics, optical sensor & systems development, and product development, DELTA believes it brings streamlined development and commercialisation to the PoC sector and can thus define and implement a value chain focused development model that can overcome the stringent barriers to producing a successful product in this highly complex and competitive sector of the in vitro diagnostics market.
